Pancreaticcancerisoneofthemostchallengingcancerstodiagnose,astherenospecificandreliablescreeningtestsonthemarketthatcanhelpdetectthediseaseinearlystages.AccordingtotheAmericanCancerSociety,ifcaughtinitsearlystages,the5-yearsurvivalrateis27%,butifcancermetastasizesthenthisnumbergoesdownto11%.TheAsPC-1celllinecomprisingpancreaticbetacellsandisaninvaluabletoolforpancreaticcancerresearchaswellascommonlyemployedforstudyinghumaninfectionsrelatedtothepancreas.TheAsPC-1celllinewasreestablishedvianudemousexenograftsinitiatedwithcellsfromtheascitesofa62-year-oldCaucasianwomanwithmetastaticpancreaticadenocarcinoma.Thereestablishedepithelialcellsretainedtheiroriginalmorphology.Thistumorrepresentsanewmodelforhumanpancreaticcancer.AsPC-1cellsareusedinstudiesseekingpossibletreatmentsforpancreaticcancer,whichhasafive-yearsurvivalrateoflessthanonepercent.Forexamples,researchhasshownthattheplantalkaloidsanguinarineinducedapoptosisofAsPC-1cells.Inanotherstudy,immunoprecipitationandELISAusinghumanpancreaticcancercellsrevealedthepresenceofhighlevelsofDcR3proteininAsPC-1cells.ReducingendogenousDcR3levelsincreasesFasL-inducedapoptosisofhumanpancreaticcancercells.Anotherintriguingstudyindicatedthatdeuteriumoxide(D2O),alsocalledheavywater,inducedapoptosisofAsPC-1,andisconsideredapossiblefuturetreatmentagainstAsPC-1.
